The inaugural Children North East Milecastle Challenge with be set across the stunning Unesco World Heritage site of Hadrian’s Wall, in a striking walk that takes in 12 miles of breathtaking scenery.

Milecastle 12, Meeting at The Sill; walking from Walltown to Housesteads: Sunday 24th September 2023.

Participants of any age can join in but participants aged 17 years and younger to be accompanied by an adult. Transport from the finish point back to The Sill YHA (participants to provide their own transport to meet at The Sill YHA for the start of the walk).

From Walltown Crags we follow the wall remains, passing through Aesica Roman Fort, then along Windshields Crags, Highshields Crags and Hotbank Crags to reach Housesteads Roman Fort; a very scenic section with plenty of wall remains to be seen along the way.Our walk starts from Walltown Crags car park and takes us up past the pond onto Walltown Crags. The route then stays close to the wall as it follows the contours of the land down to Caw Gap, then up onto Windshield Crags where we reach the highest point on the Hadrian’s Wall route.Heading east onto the Wall at Steel Rigg, full of amazing views, film sets and historical wonders, Sycamore Gap is famous for the Kevin Costner film Robin Hood, one of the most pictured parts of the Wall.

After a quick selfie our route will follow the wall as it runs alongside Crag Lough, before climbing up onto Housesteads Crags. Here you will encounter several more significant accents and decent, offering a real feel of the environment the Romans endured nearly two thousand years ago.

Finally it’s a short walk to Housesteads Roman fort, where we leave the wall and finish at the information centre, for refreshments or a look around the fort before returning back at The Sill.
