Gifts in Wills

Leaving a gift in your will to Children North East allows you to leave a lasting legacy to help children in the region to grow up to be healthy and happy.

There are various ways in which you can leave a gift to our charity which will make a significant and enduring difference to the lives of babies, children and young people here in the North East.

How to make a Will or update an existing Will

  1. Consider your assets

Make a list of the assets that you own and approximate values such as house, savings, investments.

  1. Consider who you would like to benefit

Think about the family members, friends and/or charities you would like to benefit in your Will.

  1. Consider the type of gift you would like to give

    a) A pecuniary legacy – This is when you leave a cash gift.
    b) A specific legacy – This is when you leave a specific item such as jewellery, property.
    c) A residuary legacy – This is when you leave a percentage or share of your estate.

  1. Consider your Executors

Your Executors are responsible for administering your estate following your death. They will settle any debts you owe and arrange to distribute your estate to your beneficiaries. Your executors can be whoever you like such as friends or family members. You can also appoint a professional such as a solicitor or accountant, but your estate will need to pay their fees.

  1. Find a solicitor to write your Will

We would recommend using a solicitor to write your Will to ensure that it is valid.

Inheritance Tax

If the value of your estate is above £325,000 then inheritance tax may be due at a rate of 40%. Anything you leave to a charity is free of inheritance tax and in addition if you leave 10% or more of your estate to charity then the rate of inheritance tax may be reduced to 36%.
