Sunshine, Smiles and Summer Memories: Looking Back on a Fantastic Summer

From sandy toes and woodland adventures to train rides and family fun, this summer has been one to remember for the babies, children, young people and families who joined our Communities Team for a programme of fun-filled events across the North East!

Over the school holidays, hundreds of people came together to enjoy days out, make new friends and create lasting memories.

One of the biggest highlights of our summer was the Family Fun Day, which welcomed more than 170 babies, children, young people and family members. The atmosphere was buzzing from start to finish, with families exploring lots of attractions including a gaming bus, motorbikes, a digger, a police car, face painting, games and activities. Laughter, excitement and plenty of smiling faces could be seen throughout the day as families spent quality time together.

The event was made possible thanks to the generous support of Bellators MCC, Brew Dolphin, Flannery Plant Hire, Gamerz Parties, Green Love Hearts Face Painting and Northumbria Police who helped create such a memorable experience for everyone involved.

Families also enjoyed the chance to escape into nature during a special trip to Plessey Woods. Surrounded by beautiful woodland, children explored the outdoors, searched for wildlife and enjoyed paddling in the river on a warm summer’s day. The trip was a special opportunity to slow down, enjoy fresh air and appreciate the simple joys of spending time together outdoors.

As part of National Play Day, families joined us at Exhibition Park for a day dedicated to fun, play and adventure. More than 60 people took part, with one of the most popular attractions being the miniature railway. Thanks to the generosity of the Tyneside Society of Model & Experimental Engineers and Tyne Tunnels, children were able to enjoy train rides and receive a cuddly toy, helping make the day extra special. The event was a wonderful reminder of how important play is for children’s happiness, confidence and wellbeing.

Of course, no Children North East summer would be complete without our much-loved annual beach trip! More than 100 people headed to Seaburn for a fantastic day by the sea, and the weather didn’t disappoint! Families enjoyed building sandcastles, playing on the beach, enjoying ice creams and soaking up the sunshine. It was a day full of relaxation and special moments, with many families making memories that will stay with them long after summer has ended.

We were also delighted to be joined by corporate volunteers from Advanced, Bowmer + Kirkland, Entegral, KPS, Morgan Sindall, Overbury and Robertson, whose support helped make the day even more enjoyable for everyone involved. We’re incredibly grateful for the time and enthusiasm they brought to the event.

Each event was unique, but they all shared something in common: bringing people together. Whether families were exploring woodland trails, riding miniature trains, playing on the beach or joining in the fun at our Family Fun Day, the summer provided opportunities to connect, build friendships and enjoy experiences that might otherwise be out of reach.

As we look ahead to the autumn, we’re incredibly grateful to everyone who joined us and helped make this summer so special. The smiles, laughter and memories created over the past few months are exactly why these opportunities matter so much.

A huge thank you to our supporters who made this summer possible, from providing funding for activities, bringing along games, providing diggers and volunteering their time we truly could not have made this summer so special without you!
