Change Now

Consolidates learning from consultations carried out by Children North East since 2020, bringing together the voices of over 35,000 children and young people based in the North East. It puts young voices at the centre, exploring what is important to them and how services can be informed by the voice of their lived experience.

VOICES

Between October 2020 and July 2022, Children North East and Newcastle University joined forces to deliver VOICES Project, a consultation with almost 2,000 children and young people living in the North East. Funded by the ESRC, VOICES used coproduction methods, such as drawing, writing, comic book making and video creation to explore how their lives had changed as a result of the pandemic.

Now and Next

In 2022, Children North East were commissioned by City of Dreams, a collaboration of leading NewcastleGatehead cultural venues, to deliver a consultation with 1,200 children and young people to support their members and other local organisations understand future hopes and wishes for culture in the city.

Ingredients for Success?

Children North East's Poverty Proofing© team contributed expertise as part of the steering group behind this national survey of teachers and stakeholders on barriers to practical food education faced by pupils in secondary schools. The report was launched by chair of the All Party Parliamentary Group on School Food, Sharon Hodgson, MP in May 2023.

Young People's Views on Universal Credit

In Spring 2023, Children North East facilitated researcher Catherine El Zerbi PhD to deliver a NIHR ARC North funded report sharing insights on how Universal Credit was viewed by young people. The report, which used creative interviews, focus groups and workshops was published in April 2023.

Poverty Proofing© Paediatric Diabetes Care

From 2022 to 2023, our Poverty Proofing© Healthcare team worked with Gateshead Paediatric Diabetes Service to identify barriers to healthcare experienced by people living in poverty, through a consultation with service users and staff. This common themes report identifies trends in experience and positive actions settings can take to mitigate the impact of poverty on use of their services.

Fighting against poverty: Case studies of school action

In 2020, an evaluation of the impact of Poverty Proofing© in schools was produced by Newcastle University. This supplementary report, aimed at school leaders, highlights case studies of North East schools effectively integrating 'Poverty Proofing' into their activities and the benefits it has generated for pupils and their families.

Barriers CYP from Asylum-seeking Backgrounds Face to Accessing Counselling

Funded by the British Association for Counselling and Psychotherapy (BACP), Children North East completed research to understand of the barriers faced by displaced young people to participate in therapeutic support. This included a pilot project, delivered in partnership with North East Solidarity and Training and was delivered in November 2022.

Affordable school uniforms: a guide

In June 2023, The Children’s Society, Child Poverty Action Group and Children North East joined forces to publish a national resource for school leaders meeting new affordable uniform legislation, providing guidance on the law alongside ideas and examples of good practice from our research with schools.

Love Matters: Report of the Archbishops’ Commission on Families & Households

Children North East are a member of the Archbishops’ Commission on Families & Households, providing regular consultation on the issues impacting babies, children, young people and families, including providing evidence towards the flagship Love Matters report, which sets out how the church can support and strengthen family life.

Leaders Unlocked: Cost of Living National Report

We supported the October 2022 report exploring the impact of the cost-of-living crisis on on 340 young people's lives. Children North East supported the organisation to speak to its community and reach young. people from the North East of England.
