FAQs

What is a Mental Health Safe Haven?

This is a safe, non-judgemental space where you can come and talk to a professional about your mental health. You don’t need to speak to your GP or any other healthcare provider first, you can just drop in!

Who is it for?

Anyone aged 13 – 17 (or 18 if they are in full-time education) for anyone living in Gateshead or Newcastle.

If you’re 18 or over, Everyturn have Adult Mental Health Safe Havens in Northumberland, Newcastle and North Tyneside.

Do I have to tell my parents or my school?

No. This space is for you, and everything you tell us is completely confidential. We would only talk to your parents or guardians if we felt you needed extra help staying safe.

Can you help with neurodivergence?

Yes. Our teams can talk to you about neurodivergence and what this means, no matter if you have a diagnosis or not. This could mean explaining what it is, helping you discover coping mechanisms, advice on school and other areas of support.

Can I bring a friend?

Yes, if you would like someone to accompany you, whether that’s a friend or family member, to help you feel safe that’s absolutely fine.

What if I’m not ready to talk?

That’s okay! You can come and visit the site and have a look around the waiting area, and when you’re ready to talk we’re here.

What happens when I see you?

A member of the team will have a chat with you about how you are feeling, what you’re thinking and what you need support with (it’s okay if you don’t know how to name it!). They’ll also ask about your home and personal life, and from there they will make a decision with you about next steps and support.

What happens after I come see you?

That’s different for everyone. Our teams are trained on a wide range of mental health issues, so we will give you help however you need it. This might be a referral to another service to provide long-term counselling, signposting you to more information so you can self-refer, or just keeping the door open if you need us again.

Do I have to be in crisis to come see you?

No, we want to see you well before you hit a crisis point! We’re here to help you understand your mental health and how best keep it healthy, and how to manage any difficult feelings you may have.

What if I am in crisis?

If you are concerned about your immediate safety, contact the crisis team on 111 option 2 or 0800 652 2863. Other out of hours services are:

Leigh Elliott, Children North East CEO said; “Proper healthcare for babies, children and young people must include mental health. We are proud to be offering this vital service in partnership with Everyturn, creating a Safe Haven where children and young people are heard, respected, and actively involved in decisions about their health and wellbeing.

This service comes at a critical time. With mental health challenges among children and young people rising, it is essential they have access to the right care, at the right time. The Safe Haven will be a welcoming, inclusive space designed with input from those with lived experience – ensuring it reflects what young people truly need.

Together, we are committed to making mental health support accessible, compassionate, and empowering for the next generation.”
